Les convulsionnaires de Saint-Médard

Lorsqu'on est au centre de la chapelle des catéchismes, on se trouve au milieu de l'ancien charnier. C'est dans celui-ci que fut inhumé, en 1727, le diâcre Paris et où eurent lieu, pendant cinq ans, les fameuses scènes extatiques dites des convulsionnaires de Saint-Médard.

Abbé Châtel

Monseigneur Châtel est vers 1830, le fondateur d’une l’Eglise Catholique Française indépendante de Rome.

Origine
Né en 1795, Ferdinand-François Châtel est originaire de Gannat dans l’Allier. Ses parents sont paysans. Remarqué pour sa vive intelligence il entre au petit séminaire de Clermont-Ferrand et de continuer, grâce à de brillant résultats, au grand séminaire. Prêtre en 1818, puis vicaire de la cathédrale de Moulins, curé à Montoy-sur-Loire, aumônier au 23ème régiment, au 2ème régiment de grenadiers à cheval de la garde royale, son caractère indépendant et des idées libérales sont déjà remarquable. Il est capable de monter en chaire et l’apologie de la liberté religieuse ce qui provoque, un dimanche à Paris, une vive inquiétude et certains journaux le signalent.

Paris Bataclan Boulevard Voltaire
