Liceu Theatre (The Gran Teatre del Liceu) was built in 1847 according to the plans of the architect Miquel Garriga i Roca and support from Josep Oriol Mestres. Located in the busiest streets - Rambla, it is one of the most touristic attractions in Barcelona. It is also well-known as Barcelona Opera House.
Firstly, it was an individual asset and was the largest opera house in Europe holding 4,000 seats. In its history, it was destroyed by a bombing and two fire, the first in 1861 and the second in 1994. In the fire 1861, just the facade entrance and The Hall of Mirrors are remained. After the second fire in 1994, an auditorium was burned but it was reconstructed as the original design and re-opened on 7 October 1999. Today, it is publicly-owned and administered by the Fundació del Gran Teatre del Liceu.
If you come here just for seeing the building, not for watching opera, there are several packages for your choice. If you don’t have much time, you can get the unguided tour (at 11:30, 12:00, 12:30 and 13:00 every day). It will take you 20 minutes and 4 euros. A longer tour will last 1 hour 10 minutes and costing 9 euros. It begins daily at 10 am. In the case you would like to see what happen behind the scenes, you can take Group Tours of the Liceu and recital in the Mirrors Room at 10 am, and the duration is 1 hour 45 minutes.
