The place du Marché Sainte-Catherine is located at the end of the pont d'Arcole in the fourth district, the Marais. This road begins from the Paris d'Omerson street and ends Caron street, and is very near the place des Vosges and the rue Birague giving access to the famous place from the Rue de Rivoli. This site is part of the pathways that were drilled in 1783-84 on the site of the former prieuré de Sainte-Catherine du Val des Écoliers which partly occupied since 1783 by a market. It owes its name to the church built in 1229 by king Saint Louis to thank God for the victory of his father, Philippe Auguste, against the English in Bouvines. The church still existed in 1777, when new letters from Fontainebleau, October 18, ordered the demolition of this building and the auction of the land of the priory .
