It comes from the Ourcq canal, canalized Ourcq River born 109km from Paris in the Aisne Department.
4.5 km Saint-Martin Canal was built under Napoleon I between 1806 and 1825, like Paris canals Saint-Denis and Ourcq.
Minister of Transportation Freycinet set its gauge. The canal Saint-Martin is still navigated today,
but its traffic is not heavy, the canal being mainly used during the floods of the Seine River
when the barges can no longer flow under the bridges of the Seine.
The Canal Saint-Denis extends the Canal Saint-Martin
at the Cité des Sciences of La Villette and join the Seine
near the Stade de France around Saint-Denis-Gennevilliers.
Through the industrial area of the Ourcq for tonnage barges, the canal also goes through Pantin, and the very
popular red suburb towns of Bondy
After what, with its average depth of one meter,
the Saint-Martin Canal becomes the smallest
navigable waterway in France.
