History

The structure was built between 1887 and 1889 as an Arc de Triomphe at the entrance to the Universal Exhibition celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution. The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated March 31, 1889 and opened May 6. Three hundred workers have had to butt 18 038 pieces of wrought iron (pure iron) using 500 000 rivets.
