History

The structure was built between 1887 and 1889 as an Arc de Triomphe at the entrance to the Universal Exhibition celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution. The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated March 31, 1889 and opened May 6. Three hundred workers have had to butt 18 038 pieces of wrought iron (pure iron) using 500 000 rivets. The structure was designed by Maurice Koechlin. The accidents were high because the Dame de fer is an open structure without intermediate floors apart from the two platforms. But Eiffel took care of its workers by installing mobile scaffolds, barriers and screens. Only one man died during the installation of Otis Elevator. The Tour has faced resistance from the public during its construction, many seeing it as hurting the sight. The novelist Guy de Maupassant often dined at the restaurant of the Tower as it was the only place in Paris where he was sure not to see (I ask if it was so easy to find apartments for rent in Paris or rent house flat)! Today, the Eiffel Tower is considered a masterpiece of structural art.
Originally, Eiffel had a 20 years permit for the Eiffel Tower but it proved useful later for communications, he was granted a reprieve. The military used it as a point of dispatch for taxis in Paris to the front of the Marne which made the Eiffel Tower a symbol of victory. It was also used to capture Mata Hari, after that its destruction was unthinkable to the French. Since the early twentieth century, the Eiffel Tower is used for radio transmissions. Until the 1950s, a series of lignes connected to antennas ran from the top down the avenue de Suffren and the Champ de Mars. They were connected to radio transmitters installed in reaching small bunkers. In 1909, an underground radio center was built near the south pillar and still exists today. Since 1957, the Eiffel Tower is used for transmission of FM radio and television.
In 2000, flashing lights and four powerful searchlights were installed on the Eiffel Tower. Since then, the spectacle of lights has become a nightly event. The spotlight at the top of the Eiffel Tower gives the impression of a lighthouse illuminating the Parisian night.
The Eiffel Tower has two restaurants: Altitude 95, the first floor (95 meters above sea level) and the Jules Verne, an expensive gourmet restaurant on the second floor and have a private elevator. This restaurant has one star in the Guide Rouge.

Tower Eiffel Paris

Some figures

The tower is 300 meters high, if one adds the 24-meter antenna, the entire structure is 324 meters. When built in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world. The title was removed in 1930 when the Chrysler Building, New York, was completed (319 meters). Nevertheless, the Eiffel Tower was still greater if we did not take into account the arrows of the two buildings. The Eiffel Tower is the tallest structure in Paris.
The metal structure of the Tower weighs 7 300 tonnes and the total amounts to 10 100 tonnes. The number of steps to climb to the summit has varied over the history: in 1889, during construction, there were 1 710 steps to the platform located 300 meters from the ground after an early renewal 1980s, there were 1 920 steps and there are now 1 665.
The maintenance of the tower includes applying 50 tons of paint three different colors every seven years to protect it from rust. Occasionally, the color of the paint is changed - it is currently painted a shade of brown.

Threatened before, during and after construction, criticized and admired the Eiffel Tower has nearly been Spanish. Gustave Eiffel in the proposed project at the Barcelona Universal Exhibition of 1888 where it was refused. Already, it seemed strange and seemed not to have to fit the décor of the city (oh yes?). Eiffel represents the project for the Universal Exhibition in Paris the following year. The Eiffel Tower will be Paris, or Paris will be his Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is an iron lady (Dame de fer), a monster of steel, the symbol of Paris and even France and why not, its eroticism. If Notre-Dame de Paris attracts visitors like light moths (and God knows that the Parisian nights are warm, bright, animated), if Paris is the capital of the world's most visited, the architectural beauty designed by engineers Gustave Eiffel attracts six million visitors. The total population of France in ten years goes on the attack from that which was the tallest in the world in his time in the nineteenth. Built for the Universal Exhibition of 1889, she was threatened with demolition and eventually preserved. It must be said that the structure of the building is worrying, shocking, amazing. Formerly called Tower 300 meters at the end of the Champs de Mars beside the Seine, the legs of the Iron Lady sank to thirty feet below the ground. This is our queen definitely located in the heart of Paris, illuminating the city of light, focal point looks inspired painters, Chagall, Seurat, Delaunay and Rousseau. Not to mention writers, worshipers of architectural engineering or shocked by the monster of steel, as Maupassant. Today it is welcome and shows that all Paris, from Montmartre to the distant suburbs, Beaubourg Bercy. It also hosts art exhibitions such as the Inuit peoples living in the North Pole. Art object, it invites contemplation. Have you seen sitting on the steps of the Trocadero, take his side give a bed to the sunset? No? What have you seen then? It is everywhere in Tokyo, where it built its twin in his honor in the Paris apartment where she gives shape to this beautiful metal lamp shades and shiny black lacquer. Going up the Eiffel Tower by the stairs or elevator public (go directly to the Jules Verne, gourmet restaurant on the second floor). On each floor, one meditates on the green area of Champs de Mars, a huge park right in the seventh arrondissement, between the Eiffel Tower to the northwest and the École Militaire to the southeast, park whose history is linked to terrible French Revolution, which was suppressed by killing the petition of a crowd that opposed the restoration of the monarchy. Massacre decided by Jean Sylvain Bailly then mayor of Paris. But if history does not interest you, simply ask you what this huge monument metal center experienced as military antenna for television or radio, light central Paris. Managed by the Company which operate the Eiffel Tower (SETE), the site, which employs 500 people (250 directly employed by the SETE and 250 individual dealers installed on the monument), is open every day of the year . The company nevertheless decided to extinguish this light, characteristic of the French capital, every Thursday for five minutes, more than 350 projectors in favor of global warming.
